Object Operations in Flow Config

The commands that appear on objects across every Flow Config view — what each does, and which objects it applies to.

Updated 15 Oct 2026Infohub Docs

Flow Config's five views — Model, Template, Report, Toolbox and Deployment — share one context menu vocabulary. The same verb means the same thing everywhere it appears, but it is not offered everywhere, and several of the names are not self-explanatory. This page is the reference.

If a command you expect is missing from a right-click menu, it is almost always one of three things: the object type does not support it, the object is restricted, or a precondition is unmet. Each is covered below.

The operations#

Command What it does Where
Search Finds objects by name within the current view All views
Show in… Jumps from a reference to the object itself, expanding the tree to it All views
Edit text Renames the object in place All views
Move / Move to… Re-parents the object. Move is drag-and-drop; Move to… opens a picker, which is how you move something across a long tree without dragging Model, Template, Report, Deployment
Delete Removes the object All views
Import Brings objects in from an exported model file Model, Template, Report, Toolbox
Serialize Writes the selected object to a file Model, Template, Report, Toolbox
Backfill Re-runs retrieval and calculation over a past period Model, Template, Deployment
Monitor activity Opens live activity for the object Model, Template, Deployment
Deploy to… Moves the object to a different Data Engine Model, Template
Change deployment state Deploys or undeploys the object Model, Template, Deployment
Link to template / Delink Attaches an object to a template, or detaches it Model, Template
Update from template Pulls template changes down into the instance Model, Template, Report
Derive to… Creates a derived template or chart from this one Template, Report
Release to… / Change released state Publishes a version for consumers of the template or chart Template, Report
Set as default Marks the object as the one used when nothing is chosen explicitly Toolbox — time schemes and palettes; Deployment — Data Engine, Integration Engine, Message Engine, Platform
Task Opens the object in a browser, or copies its link Report, Deployment

The ones whose names mislead#

Three commands do something other than what the word suggests.

Task means "open in the browser"#

Task has nothing to do with scheduling or job queues. On a chart, dashboard or dashboard loop it opens that object in the Infohub web client, or copies a direct link to it. On a Deployment object it does the same for a running Server, opening its API root.

The links it copies follow the client's own URL shape:

<server-url>charts/<chart-id>
<server-url>dashboards/<dashboard-id>
<server-url>dashboard-loops/<dashboard-loop-id>

That is the supported way to get a link to a specific chart for an email, a wiki page or an embedded frame — rather than copying whatever is in the address bar after clicking around.

On a Deployment object, Task is only enabled while the parent Server is actually running. Greyed out means the Server is not up.

Deploy to means "hand this to a different engine"#

Deploy to… does not deploy in the sense of applying configuration — that is Change deployment state. It moves a metric, event scheme or metric folder to a different Data Engine, and the picker lists every engine except the one that currently owns it.

This is how a large model is divided across engines. Content assigned to no engine is never processed at all, which is the usual explanation for one area of a model being silent while the rest works — see Running the Data Engine.

Serialize is not quite Export#

Both write objects to a file, and they do not cover the same objects:

Object Serialize Export
Metric folder yes yes
Metric yes yes
Event scheme yes yes
Measure yes no

A single measure can be serialized but not exported. If you are trying to move one measure between instances and cannot find Export, that is why — serialize it, or export its parent metric.

See Importing and Exporting Models for choosing between the two.

Merging duplicate measures#

Models acquire duplicates. The usual way is templates arriving late: measures were built by hand first, a template is introduced afterwards, and now each line has both its original measure and the template-linked one measuring the same thing.

Deleting the original is the right answer and the tedious one, because it is referenced by charts, calculations and limits that all have to be repointed first. Infohub can do that repointing for you.

Hold Shift and drag the duplicate onto the measure you are keeping. Infohub moves the references across and removes the duplicate.

Important

The measure you keep must be template-linked. This is the one constraint, and it follows from what the feature is for: it exists to resolve duplication created by introducing templates. Shift-dragging onto a purely local measure is not the supported direction.

So merge towards the template-linked measure, not away from it. If neither measure is template-linked, link one first or delete by hand.

Check the result before moving on. Merging repoints references, so a chart that was reading the duplicate now reads the keeper — which is the intent, but it is worth confirming on one chart before doing it forty times.

Restricted objects#

An object can be restricted, and a restricted object refuses Serialize, Export, Backfill, Delete, Update from template and Delink. The commands are disabled rather than failing with an explanation, so an object where several commands are simultaneously unavailable is usually restricted rather than broken.

Restriction is a permissions mechanism, and it is decided at the metric folder:

  • An administrator is never restricted.
  • If the folder has groups assigned, you are restricted unless you are a member of one of them.
  • If the folder has no groups assigned, nobody is restricted — an unsecured folder is open to everyone.

That last rule is worth dwelling on: permissions are opt-in per folder. A folder nobody has secured is not protected by the security applied to its siblings.

Restriction then cascades down the tree from the folder that defines it:

Metric folder < the only place restriction is decided
+-- Metric < inherits from its folder
| +-- Measure < inherits from its metric
+-- Event scheme < inherits from its folder
+-- Event attribute < inherits from its event scheme

So you cannot grant access to a single measure inside a restricted folder, and you cannot restrict one measure inside an open one. The folder is the unit of access control — which is a reason to let permissions influence folder structure, not only reporting tidiness. See Users, Groups and Access and Folder Structure Best Practices.

Why a command is greyed out#

Command missing or disabled Check
Serialize, Export, Backfill or Delete The object is restricted — you are not in a group assigned to its metric folder
Export on a measure Not supported — measures serialize only
Set as default Already the default, or a type that has no default — Servers and Template Servers do not
Task The Server is not running
Deploy to… Only one Data Engine exists, so there is nowhere to move it
Update from template The object is not linked to a template
Delink The object is not linked, or is the template itself
Release to… Nothing has changed since the last release

Diagnosing#

Symptom Likely cause
An edit has no effect on the running system The object's deployment state is Different — see Deploying Configuration
One area of the model produces nothing It is not assigned to any Data Engine; use Deploy to…
A copied browser URL does not open the chart for a colleague Use Task → copy link rather than the address bar; the client rewrites URLs as you navigate
Backfill is absent on an object that needs it The object is restricted, or it is not a type that holds values
One user can edit a measure and another cannot The metric folder above it has groups assigned that one of them is not in
Move to… does not list the destination The destination is not a legal parent for that object type
